Learning to Cultivate Laying Hens through YLAF Internship

One of the goals of the Youth-Led Agri-Food (YLAF) program by Plan Indonesia, supported by Citi Foundation, is to increase the capacity of NTT young farmers in cultivating and maintaining sustainable livestock so that they can provide sustainable food source for their community and help reduce stunting prevalence in the long run.
That is precisely what Asti (29 years old), a farmer and program participant from Soe who is now able to breed laying hens herself, learned through the program. She learned this during a a 3-months internship in Tanaoba Lais Manekat Foundation, a laying hen farmer group located in the region, where she and another 15 youths were responsible in managing up to 8,000 chickens in two separate coops.
“Prior to joining YLAF, I have only heard about the laying hen cultivation method through limited mediums. I am so happy to be able to get these valuable and practical lessons where others might need years to learn in college,” Asti said to the Plan Indonesia team.
