Our History

Yayasan Plan International Indonesia (Plan Indonesia) is affiliated with Plan International which was founded by a British journalist John Langdon-Davies and a humanitarian worker Eric Muggeridge in 1937, with the initial goal is to provide food, accommodation and education to children whose lives had been disrupted by the Spanish Civil War. Langdon-Davies conceived the idea of a personal relationship between a child and a sponsor – a sponsorship model that puts the child at the centre and remains the core of what we do.

Today, Plan International is known as a global organisation that is active in 75 countries, including Indonesia, with current vision is to advance children’s rights and equality for girls.
In Indonesia, Plan International operated in 1969 as ‘Foster Parents Plan Foundation’ or ‘Plan International Indonesia’. We focused on the area of Yogyakarta as requested by the Former Governor of Yogyakarta Province, Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwana IX, with a mission to protect the rights of abandoned children.

As time went by, we widened our work area to the other seven provinces, from Bali (1972), South Sulawesi (1978), East Nusa Tenggara (1986), West Nusa Tenggara (1989), Central Java (1990), East Java (1994), West Java (1997).
Our representative office was initially located in Bogor in 1997 then the headquarter moved to the capital city of Jakarta in 2005.

In 2016, we began the institutional transformation from an international to a national organisation and officiated the legal name ‘Yayasan Plan International Indonesia’ in June 2017. The launch and promotion of the new brand known as ‘Plan Indonesia’ took place on 21 March 2018.
Since then, we have been known as ‘Yayasan Plan International Indonesia (Plan Indonesia)’ that is still affiliated with Plan International.

Vision

We work to advance the fulfilment of children’s rights and the equality of girls.

Mision

  • Empowering children, young people and communities to create fundamental changes that address the roots of discrimination against girls, as well as exclusion and vulnerabilities.
  • Encouraging change in terms of practice and policy at the local, national and global levels through influence, experience and knowledge of the realities that children face.
  • Increasing the capacities of children, young people and communities so that they will be ready for and responsive to crises and able to overcome difficulties.
  • Supporting children’s growth and optimal development from birth until adulthood.

Our Values

Youth Advisory Panel (YAP)

In carrying out our mission, Plan Indonesia involves and collaborates with youth. Therefore, we established a Youth Advisory Panel (YAP) to ensure the meaningful participation of young people in the governance and management of Plan Indonesia’s institutions.

YAP comprises a group of young people aged 17 to 24 representing three Districts in East Nusa Tenggara where we work to support sponsored children and several members at the national level. Their role is to provide strategic input and ideas to Plan Indonesia from the perspective of children and youth..
