Gret and Resilient School

13 December 2023

Gret, a child assisted by Plan Indonesia from one of the villages in Nagekeo, recently participated in an activity that gave her valuable experience. Plan Indonesia through PIA Nagekeo conducted a Multi Risk Assessment at the school where Gret studies. This activity involved the school committee, teachers, teaching staff, and students in grades 4, 5, and 6. The purpose of this Multi Risk Assessment is to assess what threats may occur in the school and the surrounding environment. In addition, this activity aims to evaluate the school’s capacity to deal with these risks, with the hope of providing recommendations to create a “Resilient School.”

The participants were very enthusiastic, especially Gret who actively participated. Gret was fascinated by this activity because she gained new knowledge about disaster and social interaction.

“It turns out that resilient schools are not only about disasters, we should also not bully our friends, later they can be traumatized and don’t want to go to school anymore,” said Gret. She also emphasized the importance of understanding bullying after realizing the negative impact it can have.

“I love positive activities like this, and I hope Plan Indonesia and the school continue this kind of activity,” said Gret.

Laurensius Paji, Chairman of the Committee as well as the local Village Head, sees the benefits of this activity for both the school and the community. Through this activity, participants were able to identify the root of the problem around the school environment.

“We can know the steps to take. For example, when there is a disaster, our priority is to save the students and the people around the school,” said Paji.

Paji hopes that Plan Indonesia will continue the Tangguh School program, as it has proven to be very beneficial in creating a safe school environment for local village children. With this spirit, Plan Indonesia and local schools can continue to collaborate to protect the younger generation from various threats.
