Building the Future STEM Workforce: Plan Indonesia and JPMorganChase Strengthen 7 TVETs
22 May 2025
Jakarta, 22 May 2025 – More than 243,000 people or 72% of the unemployed population in Jakarta last year were youth aged 15-29 (Central Statistics Bureau, 2025). Increasing the capacity of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions can help reduce this number as TVETs are often the first opportunity for young people to access the job market, particularly in the information technology, science, engineering, and mathematics (IT/STEM) fields.
Based on this context, Yayasan Plan International Indonesia (Plan Indonesia) and JPMorganChase launched the Tech Muda 3.0 program on Thursday (22 May, 2025). This program will run until December 2026 and will help build the capacity of 7 TVET institutions and 70 TVET staff in the Jakarta area (Jakarta, Bogor, and Tangerang) through training in high demand job sectors such as web programming and digital marketing.
“We found that employment support doesn’t always have to be directed at young job-seekers themselves, but can also be strengthened through training institutions. This third ‘Tech Muda’ program builds on lessons from the previous two, where across both programs 658 youths were trained and 426 youths securing part-time or full-time employment. We are pleased to continue working with JPMorganChase on this initiative,” said Dini Widiastuti, Executive Director of Plan Indonesia, at the launch of Tech Muda 3.0.
“For almost a decade now, JPMorganChase has been a proud partner to Plan Indonesia and we’re pleased with how the Tech Muda 3.0 continues to focus on building TVETs’ capacity as a measure to scale the program impact to benefit more youth,” said Gioshia Ralie, Senior Country Officer of J.P. Morgan Indonesia. “JPMorgan Chase believes that everyone deserves equal access to opportunity. We also believe that a diverse workforce is not only beneficial for industries, but for the society at large. We’re committed to advancing skills development for women and youth in Indonesia and to fostering a more inclusive economic growth.”
Through the program, institutions independently implement an updated, industry-relevant curriculum and create inclusive learning with the goal of increasing young women’s employment in the IT/STEM sector by 30%. Tech Muda 3.0 will also support TVET institutions in strengthening private sector partnerships to boost graduate employment. Best practices from the program will be compiled into a guidebook for other TVET institutions to enhance their capacity.
Tech Muda II had a lasting impact in the lives of participants. For example, Tasyah, a web programming participant, said that Tech Muda II played an important part in her career and taught her the technical and soft skills needed to join the digital workforce. Through Tech Muda II’s job-seeking assistance, she received a social media internship at a large Indonesian news company, which then turned into a full-time position. As she said, “The support that I had from the Tech Muda II program did not stop there. Even as I gained employment, the mentors continued to provide me with mental support to persevere in the workplace.”
