Access to Clean Water for Aldi
14 October 2023
Aldi (12 years old) is one of the sponsored children (SC) of Yayasan Plan International Indonesia (Plan Indonesia) who lives in one of Plan Indonesia’s assisted villages in South Central Timor District (TTS), Timor Nusa Tenggara Province (NTT).
In Aldi’s daily life, there are many challenges that he has to face. ‘This limitation makes it difficult for me to reach clean water sources in the village. For years I had to help my parents fetch water on foot, a distance of more than 500 meters.’
In 2021, Aldi’s village received clean water facilities in the form of 9 tap monuments, and 1 reservoir built by Plan Indonesia. One of the tap monuments was installed right behind his house, so now Aldi does not need to bother fetching water anymore. “With the convenience that I get, I am happy, now I have more time to play with friends and also study,” said Aldi.

A piece of the story above is Aldi’s story when he met Plan Indonesia staff, Yosafat Manit or commonly called Om Yos. Om Yos and other Plan staff are tasked with ensuring that all of Plan’s commitments to assisted children, ranging from access to education, immunization, birth certificates, access to clean water, and also protection can be fulfilled.
The topography of the TTS region, which is mostly hilly, creates obstacles for the community, especially children, in carrying out their activities. Most village settlements are located quite far from each other, and this can be a risk for children who help their parents fetch water.
Plan Indonesia continues to support the TTS government in ensuring access to clean water for SCs and their families and communities. The access to clean water that Plan Indonesia continues to fight for must be accessible to children and families in less than 30 minutes.
In TTS alone, Plan Indonesia currently assists 46 villages. Not only in TTS, in NTT Plan Indonesia is also located in Lembata, Nagekeo, Manggarai, Kupang, Belu and Malaka districts.
