5 Places That Will be Drown by Climate Crisis

19 January 2024

The climate crisis has become a serious threat to all inhabitants of the earth, regardless of who we are and where we are. Year by year, the impacts of climate change are increasingly evident and threaten the existence of various aspects of life, including the sustainability of cities around the world. Some cities around the coast, as well as river deltas, are predicted to sink due to the climate crisis.

The sinking of some of these places is the result of a series of factors and events that humans have done. However, at least two factors are the result of warming seawater and increased melting of glaciers or other sea ice.

Climate Crisis Caused by Earth’s Temperature Rise

Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, emphasized that the increase in the earth’s temperature will greatly affect the rise in sea levels. Guterres added, if the earth’s temperature rises by 2 degrees Celsius then, sea water will rise by 6 meters. Then, if the temperature rises by 5 degrees Celsius, sea water will rise up to 22 meters. This sea level rise is unimaginable.

This sea level rise is not only worrying about the drowning of some cities around the coastline and river deltas, but also small islands.

Here are five places threatened by climate change:

Jakarta, Indonesia

The sinking of Indonesia’s capital city, Jakarta, is no myth. Frequent flooding is one sign of the serious problems caused by rising sea levels. Land subsidence caused by overexploitation of groundwater exacerbates the situation. Indeed, the survival of the city and its millions of inhabitants is now increasingly threatened.

Nile and Mekong Delta

According to Csaba Kőrösi, President of the UN General Assembly, several cities around the Nile and Mekong Delta regions are predicted to sink. In fact, the two regions of the delta above have some of the richest agricultural areas in the world. But, unfortunately, due to the climate crisis, 10 to 20 percent of the fertile lands will disappear.

Miami, United States

Miami is an example of a city on the coast of Florida in the United States. The city has many important infrastructures and properties that are also under threat due to sea level rise. Miami’s beautiful beaches are being eroded day by day. Not only that, but now frequent tidal flooding has caused some extensive damage.

Maldives

The Maldives is predicted to sink 78 years from now or by 2100, due to climate change. As much as 80 percent of the Maldives Islands are less than one meter above sea level. This makes almost all islands in the Maldives fully submersible. In fact, more than 90 percent of the Maldives’ islands are flooded every year.

The climate crisis has opened the world’s eyes to its vulnerability to rapid environmental change. Collaborative efforts between governments, civil society and international organizations are crucial in meeting this challenge. With proper mitigation and strong adaptation measures, there is still hope to protect these cities from the increasingly real threat of drowning due to climate change.
